When Life Blows… Literally (My Tire-Tastrophe on the Toll Road)

Today was one for the books. You know those stories you hear and think, “That would never happen to me?” Well, buckle up because today, I became the main character in a freeway fiasco I didn’t ask for.
There I was, cruising in the toll road lane, minding my business (and my podcast), when suddenly, BOOM! My tire exploded. Not a little pssshhh, but a full-on, “Is this an action movie?” kind of blowout. And of course, it happened in the one lane where you're not even allowed to pull over. Because why not add a little spice to your Monday?
Naturally, I called my husband like any rational woman on the brink of a breakdown would. Only to realize... he couldn’t get to me. Why? Because I was trapped in toll road purgatory with no entrance near him. Awesome.
So, there I sat... trapped, stressed and silently panicking as cars were flying past me like they were auditioning for Fast & Furious: Toll Road Drift. I seriously started praying hard, like “Lord, if this is how I go, can you at least make sure my eyebrows look okay?” kind of prayer.
Then out of nowhere a hero. Someone who saw me stranded and was actually worried called CHP on my behalf. God bless the Good Samaritan with good cell reception. Within minutes, a California Highway Patrol officer showed up and became my unexpected guardian angel in uniform. (And yes, I awkwardly waved like a lost puppy.)
He didn’t just show up—he went into full rescue mode. The officer contacted dispatch to check the ETA of my tow truck (which naturally was miles away, because roadside assistance is apparently a myth), then he did something wild, he stopped traffic and escorted me off the freeway like I was royalty... or just a full blown damsel in distress. Either way, I blushed like a tomato. Embarrassing? A little. Grateful? A whole lot.
The officer didn’t just leave me; he waited with me until the tow truck arrived and even stayed after that until my husband finally found a way to rescue his damsel in tire distress. It was humbling, a little terrifying, and yes, hilarious now that it’s over.
But here’s the truth: God protected me in every single moment. Even when I felt alone, scared, and stuck with nowhere to go, He sent help literally. Just like Psalm 121:8 says:
“The Lord keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever.” (NLT)
So today, my tire blew out. But my faith? Still rolling strong.
Moral of the story? Keep your tires checked, your faith stronger, and never underestimate the power of a stranger’s kindness or a CHP officer with the patience of a saint.
Also, I swore I’d never drive the toll road again… but who am I kidding? That overpriced strip of pavement is the only thing keeping me sane during rush hour.
Until next time,
